a day trip to Agra

先週の水曜日、日本から来た友人とともにアグラへ行ってきました。アグラと言ってもピンと来ないかもしれませんが、あの有名なタージ・マハルがある町です。デリーから列車で３時間半なので、日帰りで行くことができます。列車を翌日で予約してしまうという大失敗をしてしまいましたが、当日券を買い、なんとか到着。駅で、オートリキシャ１日貸し切りツアーに申し込み、タージ・マハル、アグラ城などを回りました。建物のあちこちにある彫刻がとても印象的でした。（写真はここをクリックしてください。）

Last Wednesday, I went to Agra with a friend of mine from Japan. Agra is located on the banks of the river Yamuna. It's only three and a half hours away by train from Delhi. We hired an auto rickshaw and saw every parts of the city. All the Mughal-era buildings are gorgeous and splendid! I especially like their special inlay works on marble. (Click here for photos)

Varanasi weekend

またまた前回から間があいてしまいました。授業が始まり、その準備に追われる毎日です。その合間を縫い、日本から友人が遊びに来てくれたので、週末を利用し、バラナシ（バナーラス）へ行ってきました。インドといえば、ガンジス河で沐浴するヒンズー教徒の人の姿。それが見られるのがここです。列車で約１２時間です。夕方デリーを出て、朝には向こうに着きました。雨期ということで、雨かくもりだろうと思っていたら、大間違い。ひどい暑さでした。どこも、人、人、牛、湿気、バイク、ほこり、そして・・・日本語が上手なあやしいインド人だらけ。でも、聖河ガンジス河で沐浴する人、町のあちらこちらに小さなお寺があり、熱気に包まれた歴史ある神聖な町でした。今回は一泊しかできませんでしたが、今度はもう少しゆっくりしたいと思います。雨期ということもあり、水かさが多かったので、ボートにも乗らなかったので、次回こそ！（写真はこちらから見てください。）

Again, it's been awhile since the last update. It's been very hectic since new semester began. Last week, a friend of mine visited me from Japan, and we went to a place called Varanasi, which is located on the banks of the River Ganges. It's one of the oldest towns in India and is known as a holly city. Everywhere you see people, people and people! And a lot of annoying barkers who are fluent in Japanese. I felt a bit tired of being followed by those talkative Indians. But, apart from the drag, you can feel the vibe of Hindu people and Hinduism. I couldn't stay longer because I had to come back to Delhi for work, but next time I will definitely spend more time there. (Here are photos.)

Independence Day weekend

前回書いてからしばらく時間があいてしまいました。旅行から帰って来てから、目の具合が悪くなったり、新学期が始まったりでバタバタしてしまいました。ありがたいことに、今週末は月曜日がインドの独立記念日（１９４７年にイギリスから独立）なので、日曜日の今日もゆっくりできました。久しぶりに今日の晩ごはんの写真を載せます。から揚げですが、ちょっとネギしょうゆのたれをつけてみました。サツマイモを見つけたので、みそ汁に入れました。こちらにいると、季節感が全然ありませんが、サツマイモを食べて、ちょっと秋が近づいたような気がしました。

It's been awhile since I had the last post. After I came back from the trip, I've been having hectic days; got my left eye infected and new semester started, etc. Thankfully, I get three days off this weekend, since Monday is the Independence Day of India. Today I spent my time doing some work for class, and tried new recipe for chicken. I found Japanese sweet potatoes, so I put it in my miso soup. It was quite tasty.

７月１５日から６泊７日（車内泊２日）で、デリーから南西約７００キロに位置するダモーというところへ行ってきました。同じボランティアで助産師さんとして活動する友人のところへ行ってきました。見るもの、聞くもの、食べるもの、感じるもの、すべてがデリーとは違いました。デリーでは不自由なくできるようなこともできない過酷な状況の中、熱い心意気を持って頑張る彼女にとてもいい刺激を受けました。

実際の出産の様子を見ることもできましたし、「へー！！」と思わず声を出してしまうようなことばかりの旅でした。こんなインドもあるのか、と。ただただ不思議な気持ちなりました。

ヒンディー語が全然なので、聞きたいことも聞けず残念でしたが、ダモーの人の温かさ、包容力にとても感激しました。色々な経験ができ、本当に楽しい旅となりました。今回、ずっと面倒を見てくれた（通訳、案内、説明、色々！）友人に、心から感謝しています。どうもありがとう！（写真はこちらからどうぞ）

I was in a place called Damoh from July 15 to 20. The place was about 700km away from Delhi, and I took an over-night train for the first time. The train was much more comfortable than I'd expected.

I was much moved and encouraged by my friend who has been working hard in such a remote area. Damoh, literally, feels like a foreign country to me. Everything I see, hear and feel is different from Delhi.

Witnessing baby deliveries in her hospital was a truly 'wow' experience. I thought I would pass out if I saw such things, but I was just fine and amazed by the mysterious and incredible moment of human's birth. Awesome experiences.

Although my Hindi is very poor and totally useless, I enjoyed hearing talks of my friend and her Indian friends and coworkers. It was a good-good meaningful and enjoyable trip! Many thanks to my friend! (Here is for photos)

Origami with kids from the village.

マナリでの滞在中、村の子どもたちと折り紙をする機会がありました。私がヒンディー語ができないせいで、あまり話せませんでしたが、楽しいひと時でした。初めての折り紙で鶴を作った彼らの観察力に脱帽！（写真はこちらから）

While I was in Manali, I had a chance to do Origami paper crafts with kids from the village. Since my Hindi is very poor, I couldn't talk with them that much. But still, I had a good time with them. (More photos...)

家の近くで仔猫が生まれました。今日は写真を撮ることができました。ネズミを退治してくれるだろうから飼いたいけど、病気や餌、２年後のことを考えると、やはり難しいです。残念。

I found a couple of new-born kitties just outside of my apartment. Isn't she so adorable? I would love to have this cat, but it'd be really difficult for me to raise her here, unfortunately. I thought she would be a good mouse hunter.

Celebrating my birthday with my little friends.

今日は近所の子どもたちがサプライズプレゼントを用意して、家に来てくれました。花瓶、文房具、七福神みたいな置物、などなど色々なものをいただきました。

そのあと、みんなで短冊に願い事を書きました。ワイワイ、ガヤガヤ、かなり盛り上がり・・・最後にみんなで踊ったりして、ちょっと激しい折り紙教室となりました。

昨年は学生たちから祝ってもらい、今回はインドの子どもたちに祝ってもらって、うれしい限りです。他にも多くの方々に祝ってもらい、本当に有り難く思います。

Today my little friends from the neighborhood came to my house to celebrate my birthday. They brought surprise gifts for me.

Then, we did the Japanese way to celebrate July 7th---writing our wishes on a paper and putting on a bamboo tree. As you can imagine, the kids got too wild, but I had a good time with them.

Last year my students had a surprise cake for me, and this year I enjoyed my birthday with my new friends. I'm sending my sincere thanks to everyone who sent me a message!
