my second spring in India

今日は、ヒンドゥー教のお祭り、「ホーリー」でした。昨年は、家に引きこもり参加しませんでしたが、今年は近所の子どもたちと一緒にお祝いしました。

Today is a Hindi spring festival called 'Holi'. I stayed home all day last year, but I decided to fully participate this year. It was fun!

The power of colors

今日はバスと電車を乗り継いで、友だちと一緒にクラフトフェアに行ってきました。午前中は人が少なく歩きやすかったのですが、午後から急に人が増え、大変でした。でも、色々なものが見れたし、何よりアッサム州（北東インド）のスナックがとてもおいしかったので、大満足です。一緒に写真を撮ったアッサム州のおばちゃんたちもいい感じでした。色鮮やかな物産展の様子はこちらからご覧ください。

I went to a crafts fair today with one of my friends. There wasn't much people in the morning, but the place was completely packed in the afternoon. It was tiring but great to see many crafts and artifacts from various places of India. We tried Assam state's special breakfast, and it was very tasty---kind of reminded me of Japanese sweets. 今日は、やらなければいけないことが山ほどあるにもかかわらず、鶏肉のミンチで、インドで初！餃子を作りました。餃子の皮もこちらの茶色の全粒小麦粉で作ったのですが、今まで作ってみた料理の中で一番おいしかったです！八百屋でレタスも売ってたので、これも初めて買ってみました。（高いと思って敬遠していたのですが、意外に安かった！）

Though I have so much work to do, I decided to make my first gyoza in India!　I made the wrapping skin with organic brown whole wheat flour, and used minced chicken, instead of pork. I think this is the best dish I have ever made so far in India. And I also got a lettuce for the first time, which I had thought would be costly, but was inexpensive.

solo sukiyaki

昨日は日本食スーパーで、牛肉を買って来て、すき焼きをしました。一人すき焼き、今年になってから２回目です。昼は大学でだいたいカレーを食べるので、夜はがんばって日本食を作ってます。

Sukiyaki last night and had its leftover tonight. I usually have an Indian curry lunch on campus, and make Japanese dishes at home for dinner.

昨日はインドの共和国記念日でした。去年はテレビで見たのですが、今年は生のパレードを見に行きました。セキュリティのために地下鉄が閉鎖され、１時間ほど歩いて会場まで行きました。やっと着いたと思ったら、すごい人で、最後は持ち物検査のための機械と警備の警察をみんなで押し倒し、席につきました・・・入るまでが大変でしたが、行って良かったです。カメラは持ち込めなかったので、ネットから写真を拝借して、紹介します。

帰りは、魚市場でエビを買って帰りました。十分に火を通したいと思ったら、ブロッコリーを炒めすぎしまいました。

I'm putting some photos of yesterday's parade, which I borrowed from other websites. On the way home from the ceremony, I got shrimps from the fish market and cooked with broccoli. I made sure the shrimps were well-cooked but I kind of overcooked the broccoli...

最近は朝の霧がひどく、視界は約１０メートルです・・・The visibility is about 30 feet in the morning.


今日は大学で学生のデモがあり、授業がなくなりました。うれしいけど、授業数が減って、また計画通りいかなくなってしまいます。学生はきっと喜んでると思いますが・・・

No class today due to the students union's strike. It's good for the students, but for me it's not so good, since I made a plan already and now have to modify it.

先週から学期が始まってますが、まだフル回転していなかったので、余裕だったのは今日までで、明日から忙しくなりそうです。木曜日は特に厳しくて、４時間も教えなければなりません・・・週のヤマです。

今日は、魚料理です。しょうがをたくさん入れすぎましたが、体が温まりました。

The semester hasn't fully started, so I've been feeling much relaxed these days. But from tomorrow, all of my classes will begin, and on Thursday, I have 4 classes, which will be a little too much for one day...

昨日は暖かったのに、今日はまた霧が出て寒くなりました。３時ぐらいに大学を出て、いつものようにオートリキシャで帰ろうと思ったら、通行止めで途中から歩かなければなりませんでした。何やら昨日近所のガソリンスタンドで火事があったようです。新聞の一面にもちゃんと載ってました。「いつも通り」と油断していると、こういうことがあるのがインドです。

It was quite warm yesterday, but got foggy and chilly again today. As usual, got off work around 3 o'clock and took an auto-rickshaw, but on the way to home, the main road was closed and I had to walk back home...Apparently, there was a fire at the petrol station and it was on today's news paper. I can never relaxed here, because you never know what would happen next....

今日の日中はよく晴れて、とても暖かい一日でした。今日は、さきほど撮った私の近所の夕焼けと、先週行った公園の写真を載せます。

昨日の土曜日は、デリーの観光地の一つであるジャマ・マスジットへ行きました。今回で４回目ですが、そこの人の多さにはまいってしまいました。どこからともなく湧いてくる人の多さを改めて感じた１日でした。

1 year anniversary

去年のちょうど今頃、デリーの空港に着きました。空港に着いて、外に出ると、火薬くさかったことを思い出します。今思えば、火薬ではなく、たき火の煙のにおいだったのかもしれません。今日は朝方に雨が降り、昨日より寒くなりました。来週から、新学期が始まります。また気持ちを新たに頑張りたいと思います。

Just a year ago I arrived at Delhi Airport, and soon after got outside the smell of gunpowder got my nose. As I think of it now, the smell was from someone making a fire to warm themselves. It rained a little bit in the morning, and got colder than yesterday. New semester with the new year's resolutions starts.

Christmas celebration is still on

３１日の夜にデリーに戻り、翌日の元旦は一人で映画を観に行きました。慌てて映画館へ行ったので、間違った劇場に入ってしまい、観たかった映画ではなく、他の映画を観ました・・・「ま、いいか」で始まった２０１２年です。

２日にも、ちょっとお出かけ。大きなショッピングモールへ行ったのですが、新年を迎えた今も、クリスマスツリーが堂々と飾られていました。私は、「まだ、あるわ」という気持ちでしたが、「せっかく作ったんだし、もうちょっと置いておこう」という物を大切にする気持ちが表れているのかもしれません。

その日、魚などを売る大きなマーケットにも行きました。お目当てのカニはなかったのですが、エビ、イカ、白身魚を手に入れました。探せば何でもあるデリーです。鮮度にこだわらなければ、魚介類もちゃんと買えます。（でも、貝類はありませんでした。）

そして、今日は、インドで太巻きゲットです。昨年、日本人のご夫婦が始められたばかりのお店に行ってきました。サーモン巻きやチキン巻きもありましたが、インド人の気分で肉類は避け、パニール巻きをいただきました。（パニールはチーズですが、味は豆腐です。）美味しかったです。公園で太巻きを食べ、公園内の鹿さんエリアなどを見て、帰ってきました。

また久しぶりの更新となってしまいました。気づけば、今年もあと数日です。さて、今日は、先週日本へ帰る直前にしたクリスマスパーティの写真です。子どもたちに「卵ナシ、チョコレート」という注文をもらい、近所のケーキ屋で頼みました。インドケーキなので期待してなかったのですが、おいしかったです。子どもたちも、「めちゃおいしい」と喜んでいました。

Again, I haven't updated this blog for awhile. Christmas in Japan is over and the year of 2012 is almost here. Before I came back to Japan last week, I had a small party with my little friends from the neighborhood. They requested a 'egg-less' and 'chocolate' cake. So I had it ready. It was cheap but pretty good. The kids were happy with the cake as well.

この前の日曜日は例のマラソン大会でした。途中少し歩きましたが、無事に６キロ走ることができました。ギリギリまで出るか出まいか迷っていましたが、走ってよかったです。久しぶりに思いっきり汗をかいて、とても気持ちがよかったです。来年はハーフマラソンに挑戦してみようと考えています。

The marathon was fun! I'm glad I did. I felt so good after the run---of course, I got pains on my legs later but it was very refreshing. I wonder if I will be able to run 21 km next year??

Time for omiyage

今学期の授業は月曜日に終わり、今週と来週は試験だけです。今日は試験監督をしなくてもよかったので、昼からおみやげ探しに行きました。

今ちょうどデリーで全国各地から店が集まる大きなイベントがあって、それに行ってきました。平日だから空いているだろうと思いきや、甘かった・・・日本の考え方はやはり通用しません。老若男女、人人人・・・「みなさん、学校は？仕事は？」と聞きたくなるぐらい多くの人が来ていて、びっくりしました。人の多さに疲れてしまい、全部回りきれませんでしたが、各地の物産展を見て楽しみました。まだもう少し見たいですが、あの混み具合を考えると、やめておいたほうがよさそうです。

Since today is off for me, I went to India International Trade Fair, to hunt for omiyage for my family. At the fair, you find all kinds of stuff from all over India and some other countries. I assumed that there wouldn't be many people since today is Thursday, but I was completely wrong...There were so many people, young and old. I felt overwhelmed by the huge size of the fair and the number of people. I got what I was looking for, but didn't have energy to see all the pavilions. It's just so huge and so crowded! I felt exhausted but enjoyed it very much. I will look forward to the next year's.

来週、デリーハーフマラソンがあります。私は６キロ走ります。めっきり運動不足なので、せめても週末は歩こうと思い、歩いています。今日も、１時間ほど歩いてきました。途中でつまみ食いをしながら・・・ですが。

I will be running 6 km for Delhi Half Marathon. I haven't done much exercise these days, but I go for a walk on weekends. I walked for an hour today. This Chicken Sharwarma Roll I found on the way has become one of my favorite foods!

久しぶりに夕飯の写真を載せます。こちらに来て、初めて自分でマトンを買って、角煮風に料理してみました。そして、電子レンジで卵焼き（焼いてないけど）を作ってみました。都会にいるということで、鶏肉も卵も簡単に手に入りますが、やはり牛肉だけはなかなか見つけることができません。

This is what I had for dinner last night. I got mutton for the first time and cooked with ginger and daikon radish. And I made Japanese fried eggs. I can find eggs and chicken no problem, but I haven't had beef for such a long time...

from the land of festivals

みんなで円を作り、同じ動きを繰り返す。どこか盆踊りに似ています。

みんな踊るの大好き！私も少し輪の中に入れてもらいました。

昨日、大学でグジャラート州伝統の踊りのイベントがあったので、日本語学科の先生たちと行ってきました。

このイベントを準備したのは日本語学科の先生だったということもあり、多くの日本語の学生たちが参加しました。授業では見られない、学生の一面が見られて、とてもよかったです。

こういうインドの文化の多様性を見ると、あぁ、インドに来られてよかったな、と改めて思います。

Last night I went to a traditional dance event with other Japanese teachers. I always wanted to go to one of those Indian cultural events on campus, but I'd never had the chance until yesterday.

The event was organized by a senior Japanese professors, so I saw many of my students there. It was actually really great to see them outside of the class.

I enjoyed the night very much. Ah, great to be in India.

買い物だけでなく、人形劇などもあり、いろいろ楽しめます

昨日は、インド各地の名産品の揃う物産展に連れて行っていただきました。持ち合わせが少なかったこと、素敵なサリーは目が飛び出るほど高かったということもあり、収穫なし。でも、見ているだけで楽しかったです。

I went to one of the crafts museums in Delhi yesterday. Since I didn't have enough money and those high-end and nice-looking saris were so expensive, I couldn't purchase any of them. But it was really great to see and enjoy my time there.
